Just last year, Chicago consumers were hit with a new city sales tax on alcohol in addition to the federal, state, county and city taxes already in place. Now, Chicago City Council is coming back for more! Mayor Johnson’s proposed 2027 budget would DOUBLE Chicago’s retail alcohol sales tax on purchases at liquor stores and other off-premise retailers. Enough is enough!
If the proposed increase takes effect, 160 Chicagoans are projected to lose their jobs with a $21 million decline in alcohol retail sales.
That means higher costs at the checkout counter for adult consumers and added pressure on the neighborhood businesses that serve them. At a time when Chicago families and small businesses are already facing rising costs, doubling this tax is the wrong approach.
The budget process is underway. NOW is the time to make your voice heard before final budget decisions are made! City Council needs to hear directly from the Chicagoans they represent.
Tell your alderperson to oppose a 100% increase in Chicago’s retail alcohol sales tax.
By speaking up, you can help protect Chicago consumers and the local retailers and hospitality businesses that contribute to neighborhoods across the city.
